Store Name:
NvD: Lekker Home
Owner:
NvD: Natalie van Dijk & Curt Carpenter
When did the store open?
NvD: 2003
How did you get started in the business?
NvD: Natalie van Dijk: Natalie van Dijk and Curt Carpenter launched Lekker Home in 2003 with a national online presence, and a storefront in Boston, because they saw an opportunity for an under-served home furnishings market. Lekker Home effortlessly merges old and new with industrial and organic materials for a warm modernist design aesthetic. Natalie and Curt create a Design for Living collection that is an edited portfolio of mid-century modern classics, independent, and exclusive design brands.
What do you love about owning the shop?
NvD: Owning your own business allows you to be in complete control of your own destiny. Every facet of the business’ success is a direct reflection of our efforts. It’s also the most challenging job we have ever embraced.
What do you find to be the most challenging aspect of the business?
NvD: It’s wonderful to be able to bask in the glow of success for a moment, but if you’re going to continue that momentum there is little time to enjoy it!
“FOR A DESIGN TIP, I ALWAYS FALL BACK ON ‘LESS IS MORE.’ IT’S ALWAYS BEST TO CHOOSE ONE REALLY GREAT PIECE, RATHER THAN FIVE NOT-SO-GREAT PIECES. SPACE IS A BEAUTIFUL THING – CREATE IT AND YOU’LL BE REWARDED.” – NATALIE VAN DIJK
What is your favorite entertaining tip?
NvD: Nothing sets the mood for evening entertaining, inside or outdoors, like candlelight. We’re all wired to be drawn to light, so why not draw people in with it?
Do you have any favorite pieces in the store right now?
NvD: My favorites change almost daily. However, if you asked my husband he would say there is nothing more masculine or comfortable than the classic Eames Lounge and Ottoman by Herman Miller. For me, I can’t live without my Japanese towels from the Imabari region of Japan. They are the softest and most absorbent towels you will ever use, and the only towel I know that gets softer with each washing. Warning: once used you’ll become jaded!
What is your favorite quote?
NvD: “I dream of painting, and then I paint my dream.” – Vincent van Gogh
What items are your best sellers?
NvD: One of our best performing brands is Belgian design house Ethnicraft. They produce a portfolio of solid hardwood furniture including tables, chairs, sideboards, media cabinets, beds, occasional tables, and shelving. All are built using classical furniture making techniques, feature stainless steel hardware, and are built for a lifetime of use. The organic designs are clean lined, and lend themselves to both traditional and contemporary homes so they complement most any décor.
What inspires you?
NvD: My home town of Amsterdam, Holland inspires me immensely. Whenever I go home I feel as though my eyes are reopened to possibility. Returning to my roots allows me to recharge my batteries and absorb the art, culture, music, and of course Dutch design that emanates from Amsterdam’s canal lined streets.
Tell us about your team members.
NvD: We’re fortunate to have a talented and diverse team at Lekker Home. Our staff encompasses backgrounds that includes art, design, technology, interior design, and architecture. All play an intricate roll in our success in providing outstanding customer service with a profound understanding of the design for living concept.
On Owning a Shop
I’m the toughest boss I have ever had! People say, “it must be great to be your own boss.” It absolutely is, but I don’t think people realize how demanding it is. When you own your own business you’re “on” all the time-calling in sick isn’t an option.
What is the importance of customer service?
NvD: Customer Service is the lifeblood of our business. Our aim is not only to completely satisfy our customers, but make them so happy with their purchase that they not only come back again and again, but become Lekker Home evangelists with their friends and family. After all there is no better salesperson or marketeer than your customers!
What sets your business apart from online shopping?
NvD: We are able to take advantage of both mediums. Our showroom in Boston allows customers to explore, touch, and feel the quality and design of our products and engage our staff. The vignettes projects ideas and inspire interior design concepts. Our website allows customers to experience our products from the comfort of their home, providing the Lekker Home portfolio nationwide.
Do you have a favorite customer story?
NvD: Boston is a culinary centrifuge, and with our unique tabletop assortment we have had the pleasure of servicing some of the city’s top chefs. The ultimate compliment is a chef not only purchasing our products for their restaurants, but also for their homes!
Are there any restaurants or shops in the area that you like to visit?
NvD: As aforementioned, we have no shortage of best-in-class restaurants in Boston. Some of our favorites include B&G Oysters, owned by James Beard, Award winning chef, and customer and friend Barbara Lynch. Another stand out is Oleana, owned by celebrity Top Chef, customer, and friend Ana Sortun. But don’t take our word for it…experience it for yourself!
